Next stop dream job nursing

08.04.2025

Pupils from the Krötensee secondary school in Sulzbach-Rosenberg spent a day getting a taste of three different professions, one of which was nursing. At the ProCurand Senior Citizens' Centre Am Herzogschloss the eighth-graders were given a practical insight into the day-to-day work of carers. They learnt how to measure blood pressure and blood sugar on a resident and how carers help bedridden people out of bed. Some of the pupils were allowed to slip into the role of the residents and experience this up close with an aid and be carried through the air. Putting on and wearing an old people's suit was intended to simulate the physical deterioration that occurs in old age. This allowed some people to put themselves in the shoes of their grandma or grandad. For example, picking up a small object from the floor was no longer so easy. Administering an injection into an organic orange - selected by nursing service manager Silvia Schmarander - was just one of many practical everyday activities in nursing care that were demonstrated. A tour of the facility showed that digitalisation is also playing an increasingly important role in care, which was a real eye-opener for the students. Some of them see digitalisation in nursing as a selection criterion when deciding on their dream job. One highlight was the wheelchair race in the outdoor area on the terrace behind the building, where there was a lot of laughter. At the windows of the facility, more and more eyes of the residents turned to the terrace to see what you can do with a wheelchair. The event ended with a snack and everyone received a small bag with information material and small giveaways, as well as the video made by the instructors themselves. There was also time for questions and answers from the pupils. The Sulzbachers were very enthusiastic about promoting the nursing profession and the taster day went down really well. Of course, not all students can imagine going into nursing at some point. However, if someone does decide to take up this dream job, the day was a complete success. The motto „We care for the joy of living“ was expressed once again. Some of the practical instructors, who organised the day brilliantly, are looking forward to accompanying one or the other nursing trainee during their training. „A big compliment to the head of nursing services Silvia for the successful interview. Thanks to the preparatory team - well done!“, praised facility manager Martin J. Preuss.
